The vine, for us, is the most important element. It is her that produces the grapes, and we should respect and take care of it.

Terroir

The concept of Terroir has a French origin and relates to the expression of the land in a particular wine. In particular, this means:

  • A soil of homogeneous characteristics influencing the nutrients the plant will have access to.
  • A specific microclimate, affecting every plot in a different manner.
  • The impact of human activities on the vines, e.g., type of pruning, way of plowing.
  • Specific to us, we could also add the influence of the surrounding forests, with notable influence on the vines.

On these four factors will strongly rely the final outcome, our wine.

Climate

At Masia de la Roqua we find a strong reflection of the Mediterranean climate. Receiving on average 450 mm of rain per year, we are clearly below the levels of nearby villages. Summers are hot, but the breeze, caused by the close proximity to the sea (8km), helps cool down the air at night and creates significant contrasts between night and day.

climaWinters are chilly, with temperatures usually below 0ºC early in the morning. Precipitation is frequent but in small quantities.

During spring we experience a phenomenon that severely complicates winegrowing. We refer to the “late frosts”, also called spring frosts. Our location, influenced by the close proximity of the Begues and Pelagons streams, suffers from low temperatures early in the morning during spring, usually below 0ºC. At that time, if the vines have already sprouted, this can cause severe damage to the plant and a significant reduction in our yields that year, and even the next one.

Soil

solThe soils at Masia de la Roqua are characteristic of the Massís del Garraf. Thus, we find argilo-calcareous soils, shallow and with a high proportion of lime.

This type of soil gives a particular personality to our wines, good acidity and potential for aging.

Varietals and plots

In the Masia de la Roqua we have a great diversity of

White varietals: Macabeu, Xarel·lo, Parellada, Malvasia de Sitges, Muscat of small grain, Muscat of big grain.

Red varietals: Sumoll, Ull de llebre, Garnatxa Negre, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Marselan.

parcelles

From all of them, we pick the plots that we consider the best, typically with autochthonous varietals, to prepare our wines.

To select the best plots, we leverage more than 15 years or monitored ripening controls performed in our vineyards.
